Invisalign vs braces: honest comparison

Patients ask us almost every week whether they should choose Invisalign or traditional braces. Both work. The honest answer is that the better option depends on what needs to move, how disciplined you are and what you want the next year or two to look like.

What each one is

Braces are brackets bonded to the teeth and connected with a wire that we adjust at regular visits. Invisalign uses a series of clear, removable aligners, each worn for one to two weeks, that move the teeth in small steps.

Where Invisalign is the better fit

Mild to moderate crowding, spacing and relapse after braces worn as a teenager are the typical Invisalign cases. The aligners are almost invisible, you take them out to eat and brush, and there are no food restrictions. Visits are shorter and less frequent. The catch: the aligners only work while they are in your mouth, which means about 22 hours a day. If you know you will forget them in a napkin at lunch, be honest with yourself.

Where braces are the better fit

Braces handle complex movements better: severe crowding, large bite corrections, rotated teeth and cases where a tooth needs to be pulled down or moved a long way. They are glued on, so there is no question of compliance. The trade-offs are visible metal or ceramic brackets, some food restrictions, more careful brushing and occasional irritation from a wire.

Comfort and time

Both options cause some pressure for a day or two after a change. With braces that is after an adjustment, with Invisalign it is after each new aligner. Treatment length is similar for comparable cases and is set by biology, not by the brand.

Cost at our clinic

At Marina Bay Dental, Invisalign starts from $3,900 depending on the length of treatment. Traditional braces are quoted after an exam. CareCredit financing is available and we can split payments into stages.

How to decide

Book the free Invisalign consultation. It includes a digital scan of your teeth and a frank opinion from Dr. Park about whether aligners will get you the result you want. If braces would do a better job, we will say so.
